Alexa, Google Assistant & Siri
You can buy a European speaker. You cannot buy a European voice.
The speaker is the easy part — Teufel, Bang & Olufsen and Devialet all make better ones than Amazon does. The assistant inside it is the gap: there is no European voice assistant at consumer scale, and the one that came closest, Snips of Paris, was bought by Sonos of California in 2019 and shut down. For a smart home that answers to nobody, Home Assistant — an open-source project run from the Netherlands — does the automation locally and can be paired with offline voice, which works and is nothing like as polished.

Not an unfinished card: we looked, and nothing in Europe does this at a scale you could actually switch to. It is here so the gap is visible — these are the places where something is missing rather than merely losing.
