Intel, AMD, Nvidia & Qualcomm
Europe builds the machines that print chips, and almost none of the chips.
This is the sharpest gap on the site, and the most misunderstood. Europe is not absent from semiconductors — ASML in Veldhoven has an outright global monopoly on the EUV lithography machines without which no advanced chip exists anywhere, and Zeiss in Oberkochen makes their optics. Infineon, STMicroelectronics and NXP are all large European chipmakers. But none of them makes a processor you could put in a laptop or a phone. Europe sells the equipment and the industrial chips; the CPUs, GPUs and mobile chips in consumer devices come from the United States, Taiwan and South Korea. Arm in Cambridge designs the architecture most phones use and was sold to SoftBank of Tokyo in 2016.

Not an unfinished card: we looked, and nothing in Europe does this at a scale you could actually switch to. It is here so the gap is visible — these are the places where something is missing rather than merely losing.
