Chromium, WebKit & Gecko
Every browser in Europe runs on an engine from California.
There are three browser engines left in the world and all three are American. Chromium is Google's, WebKit is Apple's, Gecko is Mozilla's — and every European browser on this site is a shell around one of them. Vivaldi of Oslo and Opera use Chromium; Mullvad and Waterfox use Gecko; on an iPhone every browser is required to use WebKit whatever its icon says. This is the gap underneath several other cards. European browsers give you European stewardship, no telemetry and better defaults, all of which are real. What they cannot give you is independence from the engine, because building a new one is a multi-thousand-year-of-engineering problem that nobody has attempted since Servo — which was Mozilla's, and is now a Linux Foundation Europe project, making it the closest thing to a European answer that exists.
